pour faire un complément à l'éxcéllent poste de IR76, je vous propose un topo de tous les battailons britanniques ayant participés à l'offensive de la Somme le 1er juillet 1916. Comme tout le monde le sait, les pertes furent très lourdes, 19 240 morts, 35 493 blessés, 2 152 disparus et 585 prisoniers.........
Il y avait treize divisions engagées coté britannique ce premier jour avec quasiment aucun terrain pris aux Allemands au nord de route Albert-Bapaume, mais des succès plus au sud vers Fricourt, Mametz et Montauban. Je vais procèder par l'ordre des corps d'infanterie.....

Cette division avait comme obstacle majeur le fait que le no man's land dans leur secteur était très large. Sur le flanc gauche, quelques hommes ont réussi à pénétrer les défenses allemandes, mais les vagues d'assaut suivantes ont subi un feu de mitrailleuse intense, parfois venant du secteur de Thiepval. Les battailons du centre ont subi le même sort. A droite, les hommes de la 23rd Brigade n'ont pas pu atteindre les tranchées allemandes. L'échec de cette division fut totale.

Cette division avait pour objectif le village de La Boisselle, l'un des points le plus fort dans le dispositif défensif allemand. Les trois brigades ont tous attaqués au même temps. Le cratère de la mine fut pris, mais pas le village. Quelques hommes du 16th Royal Scots ont pénétré jusqu'a Contalmaison, sans le tenir pour autant. Quelques hommes des Salford Pals ont réussi à pénétrer le village de Thiepval, mais ont étés vites neutralisés, ceci ayant pour effet l'arret des tirs d'artillerie et laissant les Allemands l'occasion de s'occuper des hommes de la 36th Division. Au sud de Thiepval, cinq bataillons furent engagés afin de prendre et tenir la position allemande connu sous le nom du granateloch. Cela fut le seul succès au nord de la route Albert-Bapaume.
